Mary Adams in Perth

The Gender Debate: Cracking the code to true partnership in the 21st century at The GroveSome weekends you never forget! We just had one such weekend in Perth with Mary Adams. Mary is a cultural visionary and senior teacher of Evolutionary Enlightenment based in the US. The EnlightenNext Perth group organized two public events with Mary on 19th and 20th April. One focusing on creating meaningful gender partnerships, and the other re-defining what it means to be a woman at the start of the 21st century. Both events were held at the awarding winning Grove Community Learning Centre in Peppermint Grove. Mary Adams with Imants Kins On Friday evening Mary Adams and local EnlightenNext leader Imants Kins had a thoroughly engaging dialogue on cracking the code to true partnership in the 21st century. The audience was introduced to an evolutionary perspective on gender roles since ancient times showing how men and women have related to each other over time.

Mary Adams speaking with participants over refreshments after The Gender Debate Then together they explored the gender polarisation we find ourselves in today, and through their own transparency and authenticity came together in a way that showed us the path forward to a liberated partnership between men and women. Their enthralling dialogue led seamlessly to a lively conversation with the audience in the question and answer period. Who would want such an evening to end – everyone stayed to continue the conversation over refreshments.

Mary Adams presenting Re-Defining Woman 2.0On Saturday Mary Adams led 30 women in a serious and focused exploration of what it means to be a true leader and helped us to identify within ourselves still active old biologically and culturally conditioned drives which when listened to can highjack our highest aspirations. The topic was brought to life through Mary’s comprehensive presentations based on her own experience and insights in the area of women’s development.

Re-Defining Woman: 2.0 breakout groups exploring leadership questions for women She set us discussion topics in break out groups that opened up a beautiful intimacy between all of us. The focus and positive energy in the room enabled us to speak transparently about our own experiences and to identify our own tendencies. Speaking about the qualities of the Authentic Self brought them very much into the space between us all.

We look forward to Mary’s next visit to Perth!

Meditation Practice

by australia · → 2 Comments

by Christopher Liddle

With the meditation marathon on the weekend of Dec 8/9 approaching it’s the perfect time to reflect on meditation and the place pushing one’s boundaries plays in deepening one’s practice.montserrat meditator

For many years I’ve been attracted to meditation and while practicing sporadically and I guess unsurprisingly, I never seemed to make much headway in terms of depth or in seeing the effects of it in my day to day life.

What would typically happen was I’d do a meditation retreat, return home and invariably I’d lose the amazing retreat level of access to consciousness and gradually return to my own level. Then somewhat dispiritedly resign myself to half heartedly continuing a practice that wasn’t really going anywhere.

At some point 2 or 3 years ago I realised that to reap the benefits that meditation is renowned for I was going to have to really apply myself. As anyone who meditates knows it can be spontaneous and effortless but more often than not one has to push through resistance repeatedly before depth opens up.

The Politics of Gender: Calling for a new women’s liberation

by australia · → No Comments

by Dr Melisah Feeney

I remember the day Australia got its first female Prime Minister. I had a mixed response – first a sense of joy and optimism that we actually finally had a female Prime Minister. Second curiosity, would there be a new ways of tackling things under the leadership of a woman? Then dread and confrontation to think why had it taken this long? I mean women had been liberated to become highly educated, control their fertility and make choices to follow political careers (that require everything) for many, many decades now.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard

As the months have rolled on with Julia Gillard in the central seat of power, my response has been to move into sadness that her gender has become a political hand grenade with plenty of power to divide, destroy and detract from the serious business of governing a country. There has been attention about the fact she lives with a man and isn’t married, doesn’t have children, the size of her butt, whether her pubic hair matches her flaming red hair on her head and so on. I don’t recall gendered sexualised attention being directed toward our male Prime Ministers.

The ugliness of the carnage following the sexism we are witnessing in the circle of parliament offers us a gift. It shows us the shadow lurking in the Australian psyche that we are not comfortable with taking women who have the power to influence society and culture seriously. We have deep work to do, digging into the underlying structures that are holding us back from having a society where gender doesn’t divide and destroy creative potential.

It not just a problem that men have to fix. We are all implicated in this, as women have been just as attacking of Julia as men have. Women need to come together with each other to start looking at how we have deep groves in our psyche that prevent ourselves from being significant change agents. How we contribute to our own sexualisation, and can often give our outer appearance more time and attention than we do cultivating deeper dimensions of our being and consciousness.

A group of us woman will be getting together in Sydney on Sunday 25 November to explore how we can support each other to influence these deeper dimensions in ourselves and culture. We need to do this work at the level of consciousness to help bring about change so that our next female Prime Minister’s creative offering is not weighted down by the politics of gender.
